Elsa On The Moon is an hommage to Baroness Elsa Von Freytag Loringhoven and her
ambiguous implication in the iconic « Fountain » artwork from 1917 .
It has never been clearly determined wether Duchamp did it or Elsa, or even Louise
Norton. Experts are contradictory and no one has managed to rule so far. Therefore some
freedom is left to everyone to have his own point of view, but does it even matter?
The Baroness appeared to be an eccentric genius, way ahead of her time and clearly
gone too soon.
The original fountain artwork was presented at Salon des artistes indépendants from New York to
be a provocative gesture towards the jury of the society of independent artists, it was refused.
The work consists of a robotic leg surmounted by a ceramic urinal, the device is balanced with
counterweights trough an extended aluminum arm.
Perfectly balanced, Elsa slowly jumps as if she was freed from terrestrial gravity. In a semi
permanent installation Elsa acts like a pendulum clock, jumping every time the bell announces the
